The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development announced an increase in the monetary jurisdiction of both the Regional Magistrates Court and District Magistrates Court, effective from 1 June 2014.

This comes shortly after an announcement on 18 March 2014 that saw a monetary increase in the Small Claims Court from R12 000 to R15 000, and which is already in effect as of 1 April 2014.

Accordingly, the District Magistrate Court’s monetary jurisdiction has increased from R100 000 to R200 000 and in turn the Regional Magistrate Courts may hear matters with a monetary jurisdiction between R200 000 and R400 000.

All matters exceeding R 400 000 are to be referred to the respective High Court.
